Ogden, Utah city officials have proposed a five-year program by which to pay for the planned demolition of old aircraft hangars on the Ogden-Hinckley Airport (OGD). The measure is part of a larger plan to make the airport more attractive to commercial airlines and air-travelers, thereby improving the Ogden’s financial status. The city’s program has been challenged, however, by hangar lessees, who’ve brought a federal lawsuit alleging improvements made to the hangars by leaseholders stand to be unconstitutionally appropriated by the city in the absence of compensation or equivalent recourse.

On 08 February 2023, the FAA published a Notice of Policy in the Federal Register confirming that it would no longer require letters of deviation authority (LODAs) for most flight training in experimental aircraft—including instances in which the training aircraft’s use is provided in the absence of compensation. LODAs pertaining to flight training in experimental aircraft were introduced shortly before AirVenture 2021 following a court’s ruling that almost all flight training in experimental aircraft was contrary to FAR 91.319(a)(2), which prohibits the operation of experimental aircraft for compensation or hire.

Vast expanses of rural Canada rely on air ambulance services and the skilled pilots by which such operations are staffed. Regrettably, the number of helicopter pilot licenses being issued by Transport Canada has declined precipitously over the last decade. The egregious shortfall has raised concerns over the future of Canada’s air ambulance services. In 2012, Transport Canada licensed 62 new helicopter pilots. A decade later, in 2022, the agency issued only 12 such licenses—a decline of eighty-percent.

The Air Force has introduced the Charles McGee Leadership Award, aimed at providing tuition or housing assistance to all Air Force ROTC cadets that commission into the Air or Space Forces. The unveiling took place at a ceremony held January 27 at the University of Maryland. The CMLA is a 2-year scholarship to help relieve financial burdens and help cadets focus on their academic and leadership development. Eligible cadets will be granted a 2-year tuition award of $18,000 per year, or have it converted to a housing benefit of up to $10,000 per year.

On January 13, 2023, about 1545 Alaska daylight time, a Taylorcraft BL-65 airplane, N29886, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Wasilla, Alaska.
