Structural Failure Takes Life Of Reno Race Pilot

Tragic Start To Aviation's Premier Race Event

With the annual excitement of the Reno Air races not quite underway, a tragic accident has taken the life of a pilot in the process of final preparation for her race efforts. Formula One air-racer Erica Simpson, 32, of Phillipsburg, N.J., flying a Cassutt IIIM racer, was killed when her aircraft experienced a structural failure during an evaluation flight.

FAA Flight Data System 'Upgraded'

The FAA claims that modernization of a computer system responsible for the processing of essential flight data is near completion. An outage in the National Airspace Data Interchange Network (NADIN) last week caused hundreds of air traffic delays. Air Force Halts Wing Reorganization

Air Force leaders halted plans to perform a global wing restructure which was designed to realign fighter, bomber and rescue airlift maintenance units into flying squadrons. Maintenance and flying squadrons will remain separate and will continue doing business "as they have for the past four or five years," said Lt. Gen. Kevin Sullivan, deputy chief of staff for logistics, installations and mission support here at the Pentagon.

Astronaut Joe Tanner Leaves NASA

A veteran space shuttle astronaut, Joe Tanner, has left NASA to accept a position in the private sector. Tanner flew on four space shuttle missions and performed seven spacewalks. "Joe has played an extremely important role for both our office and the agency as a whole throughout his many years with NASA," said Steve Lindsey, astronaut office chief.

Boeing Launches GeoEye-1 Earth-Imaging Satellite

Boeing's commercial launch business has successfully launched the GeoEye-1 satellite today aboard a Delta II rocket procured from United Launch Alliance (ULA). Liftoff occurred, Saturday, at 11:50 a.m. Pacific time from launch pad SLC-2W at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. The ULA Delta II rocket deployed the spacecraft approximately 58 minutes after liftoff.

CIT Group Inc. has signed a firm contract with Airbus for a further ten A320 Family aircraft.
