FAA Invests $479.1M in Airport Infrastructure

Sustainability and Safety Improvements Nationwide

The FAA awarded $479.1 million in infrastructure grants to 123 projects in airports across all 50 states and U.S. Territories. In the release, Transportation Secretary Buttgieg said “These grants will help strengthen our country’s airports and the communities they serve by making investments that create jobs and increase safety, sustainability and accessibility.”

Among the grants given, notable projects in sustainability and resilience include improvements include the installation of charging stations in Boston’s Logan International, along with an EPA Low-Emission project that will reduce sources of ground emissions and improve air quality.

Job creation examples include improvements to the aircraft parking and hangar areas at Stennis Int. in St. Louis, Mississippi. The expanded facilities will increase local employment through the provision of necessary infrastructure in maintenance, production, and storage. Sarasota airport will receive $3.7 million for five new gates and apron loading areas to the existing terminal to accommodate existing demand. Four new airlines and 42 new routes have come to the area, increasing local employment opportunities for the area.

Investments in infrastructure at New York’s Buffalo Niagara Airport were granted at $13.3 million for runway reconstruction, the first phase of a multi-stage project that will eventually include full runway length, intersection, blast pads, and taxiways, which are currently described as “rapidly deteriorating.” The FAA expects an additional 20 years of service life after the extension. Similar renovations to Onizuka Kona Airport will replace and remove 15,000 feet of airfield perimeter fence.

A full list of grants given, the projects accepted, and their locations are available on the FAA website.
