Ukraine War Impacts FAI World Intermediate Aerobatic Championship

Owing to an insufficient number of entries in the FAI World YAK-52 Aerobatic Championship, event organizers have invited YAK-52 entrants to compete in the 3rd FAI World Intermediate Aerobatic Championship—which is being held contemporaneously. The USA YAK-52 team has accepted the invitation and will compete in the Intermediate championship, to be held in Torun, Poland from 04 June through 11 June 2022. 

EAA Announces Public Benefit Flying Day

The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) in cooperation with Air Care Alliance (ACA) is working to raise visibility for public flying and promote pilot volunteerism by hosting Public Benefit Flying Day at this year’s EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh. The event, which honors aviators who participate in any type of public benefit flying, will take place on Friday, July 29.

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) successfully prosecuted an independent filmmaker for flying a drone over a crowd of demonstrators in Dublin. The May 2021 incident saw the drone detained and its operator informed by the IAA that he’d violated its 1993 Act for “operating a drone over an assembly of people.” The agency alleged the operator did not appreciate the safety risks posed to the crowd gathered underneath a flying drone. The IAA further stated that bystanders below an airborne drone cannot safely move away if the drone malfunctions and falls, or is operated erratically.

On May 30, 2022, about 0748 mountain daylight time, an Express 2000RG airplane, N44508, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Cheyenne, Wyoming. The pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight. According to preliminary information obtained by investigators, the airplane departed the Cheyenne Regional Airport/Jerry Olson Field (CYS) from runway 27, about 0744, with the intention of flying to Texas.
