Protest Draws 1,300 Southwest Pilots

Ranks of uniformed Southwest Airlines pilots gathered beneath the scorching Texas sun at Dallas Love Field to picket in protest of their treatment by the airline. The show of solidarity drew approximately 1,300 pilots, many of whom carried signs blaming Southwest management for delays and cancellations that have upset passengers. Southwest's operation: From first to worse, one sign read, while another, more prosaic banner posited, Our passengers and pilots deserve better.

NASA Does Not Have Sufficient Time To Complete The Testing Needed Ahead Of Its Remaining Launch Period

NASA has announced that the Psyche asteroid mission, the agency’s first mission designed to study a metal-rich asteroid, will not make its planned 2022 launch attempt. Due to the late delivery of the spacecraft’s flight software and testing equipment, NASA does not have sufficient time to complete the testing needed ahead of its remaining launch period this year, which ends on Oct. 11.

H55 EPS A-Okay Says EASA

H55, the Swiss producer of electric propulsion technology, has been awarded its design organization approval (DOA) from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The measure follows the granting of the company’s production organization approval (POA) by the Swiss Federal Office for Civil Aviation in January, 2022. The DOA and the POA allow H55 to design its electric propulsion system within a defined certification framework. The procurement of the two approvals positions the company to receive type certification for its 100kW electric propulsion system (EPS) targeted for CS23 aircraft.

Signature Aviation has announced a joint collaboration with PS, the private luxury terminal service for commercial flights. The partnership—which will initially serve Hartsfield- Jackson Atlanta Int’l Airport—seeks to provide an elevated airport experience for discerning travelers. Through a long-term lease agreement, one of Signature’s two buildings at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Int’l Airport will serve as PS’s second purpose-built private terminal, thereby expanding the company’s operational sphere beyond its primary LAX location.

Vantage is a new flight display system in an upcoming product line from Avidyne. This first product is for the generation of SR20s and SR22s that have the original Avidyne display. It is an upgrade to 12 inch screens and much more powerful processing capability, along with additional system redundancies. The upgrade will be cost effective, bigger than what it replaces and all hybrid touch. On June 4, 2022, about 1430 Pacific daylight time, a Piper PA-32-300, N561PK, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Snohomish, Washington. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The pilot reported that prior to takeoff from Harvey Field Airport (S43), Snohomish, he performed an uneventful engine runup, and elected to conduct a short field takeoff from runway 17.

AD 2022-13-01 Prompted By A Report Of A Blockage In A Fuel Tank Vent Line

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Leonardo S.p.a. Model AW169 helicopters. This AD was prompted by a report of a blockage in a fuel tank vent line. This AD requires inspecting the fuel tank vent lines, as specified in a European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) AD, which is incorporated by reference. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products. This AD is effective July 21, 2022.
