Airborne 02.15.19: Sun Flyer 2, AirVenture Celebrates 747, SnF Drone Show

Bye Aerospace’s electric Sun Flyer 2 successfully completed the first official flight test with a Siemens electric propulsion motor February 8 at Centennial Airport, south of Denver, CO. The Sun Flyer family of aircraft, including the 2-seat Sun Flyer 2 and the 4-seat Sun Flyer 4, aim to be the first FAA-certified, practical, all-electric airplanes to serve the flight training and general aviation markets. Siemens will provide electric propulsion systems for the Sun Flyer 2 airplane—the 57 lb.-SP70D motor with a 90kW peak rating (120 HP), and a continuous power setting of up to 70kW (94 HP). Former USAF Intelligence officer Monica Elfriede Witt, 39 has been indicted by a federal grand jury in the District of Columbia for conspiracy to deliver and delivering national defense information to representatives of the Iranian government.  Witt, who defected to Iran in 2013, is alleged to have assisted Iranian intelligence services in targeting her former fellow agents in the U.S. Intelligence Community (USIC). Following a review of its operations, and in light of developments in aircraft and engine technologies, Emirates is reducing its A380 orderbook from 162 to 123 aircraft. The NTSB has released its preliminary report from an accident which occurred on January 29, 2019, at 0650 Eastern standard time in Ohio. The single-engine, turbine-powered, Bell 407 helicopter collided with forested, rising terrain about 4 miles northeast of Zaleski, Ohio. The aircraft was registered to and operated by Viking Aviation, LLC, doing business as Survival Flight, Inc., as a visual flight rules helicopter air ambulance flight under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135 when the accident occurred.
