ANN REALTIME REPORTING 03.31.06 1045EST: It could be a
shot in the arm for those who theorize the FAA and the ATA are in
collusion over the issue of user fees. The Air Transport
Association (ATA) announced Friday that former FAA assistant
adminstrator Sharon L. Pinkerton has been named the organization's
vice president of government affairs.
Confirming earlier speculation, Emirates, the largest Arab
airline, announced Thursday the carrier will delay its current
order for 20 Airbus A340s, in order to give Airbus time to develop
a more efficient version of the four-engine airliner.
Will New Regional Subsidiary Help NWA Find Its Bearings?
Northwest Airlines has high hopes for its new regional jet
subsidiary, which is expecting to begin flying as early as June
under the name Compass Airlines -- formerly the name of an
Australian low-cost carrier that went belly-up not once... but
twice, in the early 1990s.
"Forgotten" Missions Bring Succor To Pakistani, Filipino
Disaster Victims
Marines break things and hurt people. Navy Structural Mechanics
fix shipboard aircraft. Seabees build airfields and fortifications;
Army helicopters sweep troops into and out of combat. That's the
conventional wisdom about the US military machine; and there's
little reporting about it, until somebody dies in Iraq.

Pilots Carry Out "Practice" Strikes At ATL, Other Airports
It was, frankly, a demonstration of outrage in Atlanta Thursday,
as some 275 Delta pilots marched through the Hartsfield-Jackson
International Airport terminal to protest the company's attempts to
have their contracts run through the shredder.
As FAA negotiators left Caracas Thursday to deliberate the
possibility of allowing Venezuela to resume flights to the United
States after an 11-year ban, that country's government eased off on
the deadline for its own move to block US airlines from flying to
the South American country.
Work Lamp Falls Onto Fuel Tank, Leaves Impressions In Foam
As if they didn't have enough to worry about... NASA engineers
are now dealing with another mishap at the Kennedy Space Center.
Earlier this week, as technicians were replacing one of the
external fuel tank's problematic fuel sensors, a
halogen work lamp fell onto the tank and hit the tank's relatively
fragile foam insulation.
The third wrongful death lawsuit to be filed against Hendrick
Motorsports following the October 24, 2004 downing of a company
aircraft near Martinsville, VA, focuses on the pilots' actions
leading up to the accident that claimed the lives of all ten people
onboard the King Air 200.
Having demonstrated their abilities in combat on the frontlines
of Iraq and Afghanistan, it's little wonder why unmanned aerial
vehicles are being looked at for a variety of roles over US soil.
That could prove to be a blessing... or a curse, a House panel was
told this week.
US military officials and antitrust regulators are dotting the
i's and crossing the t's on an agreement that would allow two
financially-strapped aerospace powerhouses to merge operations for
government rocket contracts.
For the crew of a Royal Air Force F-3 Tornado, it all started
out as a routine training mission. But it ended in a life-saving
diversion as the crew escorted a crippled Beech King Air to a safe
landing Wednesday.
Former Toledo mayoral and city council candidate Terry
Shankland may be in a lot of trouble. Or maybe not. But he's at
least going to face some very interesting questions for the FAA...
now that they've found him.
When you stop to think about it, the traveling public tends to
take jetways for granted. Well, one jetway at Charlotte/Douglas
International Airport was evidently fed up with everyone walking
all over it this week... and decided to vent its aggravations on an
unsuspecting MD-88 parked at the Delta gate Monday.
"You can consider today's actions an exercise and you can stand
by for the real thing."
Source: Lee Moak, chairman of the Delta pilot
union's executive committee, on Thursday's march by approximately
275 pilots through Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International
Airport in a so-called "practice strike" against Delta management,
for their plan to toss out existing pilot contracts if allowed to
do so by a federal mediation board.
