The US Air Force Thunderbirds
decided to cancel their Sunday appearance at the Chicago Air and
Water Show after two of the aircraft touched in the Saturday
performance. The right wingtip missile rail of the number four jet
appeared to contact the horizontal stabilizer of the number two jet
while flying in the diamond formation.
"We just want to make sure that everything is perfect before we
go back up in the air," said Captain Angela Johnson, for the
The missile rail separated from the aircraft and fell into the
lake, where it remains, despite searches by the Chicago Police and
the Coast Guard.
Johnson said the last time two Thunderbirds made contact in the
air was in 1999. The team will not perform again until an
investigation can be completed.
