Guinness Recognizes NASA X-43A Speed Record

It's official. Guinness World Records has recognized the world speed record set by NASA's hypersonic X-43A aircraft earlier this year in an experimental flight over the Pacific Ocean. Using a scramjet engine, the unpiloted, 12 foot-long aircraft achieved Mach 6.83 -- almost seven times the speed of sound - - or nearly 5,000 mph, in a flight on March 27th.

EAA Airventure Museum To Celebrate Aviation's Golden Age This Weekend

The EAA AirVenture Museum and Pioneer Airport revisits the excitement of the Roaring Twenties on September 4-5 with the annual "Good Ol’ Days" celebration of what’s known by many as the "Golden Age of Aviation." Activities include barnstorming flying events like "pants racing" and "aerial golf"; learning Morse Code with Pioneer Airport’s telegram system; flying in vintage airplanes such as the 1929 Ford Tri-Motor, 1929 Travel Air E-4000 or the 1927 Spirit of St. Louis replica; creating a piece of air mail and have it flown in a vintage aircraft; or riding in a variety of vintage automobiles from the 1920s-1940s.

NTSB Issues 777 Safety Recommendations

From the NTSB... The National Transportation Safety Board recommends that the Federal Aviation Administration: Require Boeing 777 operators to replace halogen light bulbs in the cargo compartment with incandescent light bulbs on an expedited schedule. (A-04-53) Issue to all Boeing 777 operators an immediate restriction on placing baggage or other material near cargo compartment light fixtures with halogen light bulbs until the halogen bulbs are replaced with incandescent light bulbs. (A-04-54)

NBAA: Reminder About Climb and Descent Performance and Transponder Usage

The NBAA has informed ANN that the FAA's New York TRACON has published a Letter to Airmen (LTA) 04-01, entitled "Climb and Descent Performance and Transponder Usage." Recently, there have been several incidents where less-than-standard separation between aircraft occurred as a result of an aircraft's non-standard climb/descent rate performance, non-activation of transponder equipment or incorrect beacon code selected on departure.

Forecast International Sees Dynamic Growth for RJ Production

In its latest study, "The World Market for Regional/Commuter Transport Aircraft," Forecast International projects that a total of 3,728 regional aircraft will be produced in the 10-year period 2004 to 2013. The value of this production, in constant 2004 U.S. dollars, is estimated at $84.4 billion. The forecast production total includes both regional jets and regional turboprops; specifically, 3,041 regional jets are forecast, plus 687 turboprops.

"I'm a bigger girl but I'm not that big." Source: Trina Blake, who's suing Southwest Airlines because she says a gate agent humiliated her over her weight. The agent wanted to charge Blake for another seat because Trina is, well, like she said, a bigger girl. Trina says it wasn't that the gate agent brought up the subject -- it was how the gate agent brought up the subject. She says she was humiliated and insulted and can never fly again.
