Airborne-NextGen 09.17.24: VX4 Progress, Drone Fine$$$, Heart eHybrid

Also: LSA Mistook For Drone-BANG!, 2025 Flight Sim Expo, Multi-Mission Hardware, Joby in UAE

Vertical Aerospace recently completed Phase I testing of its VX4 prototype. They are now working with the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to start untethered tests. The Vertical VX4 features a 20% power-to-weight ratio increase from the previous model, allowing it to reach cruise speeds of 150 mph. Last month we described how the FAA sent notices of violations to 27 operators of UAS, along with proposed fines totaling more than $341,000. The largest fine was $32,700 for an operator whose drone caused a Wesley Chapel, Florida, Sheriff’s Office helicopter pilot to terminate a nighttime search for a burglary suspect to avoid a mid-air collision. Heart Aerospace unveiled the first full-scale demonstrator of its ES-30 model on September 12. The hybrid-electric airplane is a part of the company’s work towards making air travel more su

Airbus Capitalizes on Boeing's Slippery Grasp on Chinese Market

China Development Bank Places Mondo Order with Boeing Rival

China Development Bank Financial Leasing has announced plans to order an eye-popping 80 planes from Airbus, adding a whole fleet of A320neo aircraft to their collections in 2030 and beyond. The purchase will bolster the lessor's collection with a next-gen narrowbody airliner that's grown to embody the stable, consistent choice in a market more hit-and-miss than once expected. While Boeing has found itself mired in one embarrassing faceplant after the other, Airbus has quietly kept up its modest tempo and capitalized on consumer doubt.

Massive Aviation News Event Started 2024 Off With a Plethora of Exciting Info

Last year, we introduced the SnF Innovation Preview in which 25 companies introduced over 30 new planes, products, engines, accessories, and more… in other words… a LOT of news. Rotax previewed the powerful 916iS, CubCrafters showcased the Carbon Cub UL, Bose introduced the A30, Aerox revealed the Boomula… and so much more. This year, we went beyond that... way beyond all that, with a larger selection of news announcements that covered ALL aspects of sport, general and commercial aviation... all at the start of the 50th Annual SUN n FUN Aerospace Expo... the undisputed start to the aviation year. This year was also a major news-breaker... especially with the announcement that the DeltaHawk Diesel engine folks were working with Piper Aircraft on an STC for the PA44 Seminole. It also hosted the first forma

Airborne 09.13.24: Twin Mustang 4 Sale!, SpaceX v US, ATL Collision

Also: Batavia Housing Encroachment, GAO Disses OA-1K, MTSU Incident, Iraq Buys H225Ms

While everyone enjoys a classic warbird, there's a certain kind of buyer who looks fondly at the "Twin Mustang" of yore, one of the USAF's last piston fighters to serve. Truthfully, the XP-82 isn't quite as simple as a conjoined Mustang, despite its looks. Originally designed to provide fighter coverage to long-ranged bomber sorties, the XP-82 (later F-82 upon adoption) was born into the waning years of prop fighters. SpaceX expressed exasperation over the state of Flight 5, noting that "Starship and Super Heavy vehicles for Flight 5 have been ready to launch since the first week of August." The Flight 5 test will include their "most ambitious objective yet: attempt to return the Super Heavy booster to the launch site and catch it in mid-air." On September 10, a Delta Airbus A350 and an Endeavor Bombardier CRJ900 were involved in a collision on the ground a

Classy Aircraft Nears Production After Successful Ground Tests

Timber Tiger Aircraft is nearing the manufacturing phase of its Speedster after successfully completing ground and taxi testing. Following in the footsteps of previous Timber Tiger designs, the aircraft blends classic style with modern engineering. Flight testing of the Speedster was originally scheduled to take place in time for the 2024 EAA Oshkosh AirVenture, but faced several delays due to weather risks. However, Pfannenstiel and Timber Tiger are confident in the aircraft's performance, stating that it "handles really well” on the ground.

Airborne-Flight Training 09.19.24: ATP Sued, USAF TPS Update, SWA Training

Also: DJI Ban, Infinite Flight-Sportys, Volato Class Action Suit, Girls Take Flight

Legal action alleges that ATP wrongly fired those who opted to join a lawsuit against it and explicitly stated the only way to get rehired is to withdraw from the case. Getman, Sweeney,& Dunn (GSD), the law firm representing the instructors, said they filed the lawsuit against ATP for allegedly misclassifying its CFIs as independent contractors instead of employees and failed to pay them all they were due. As Edwards AFB’s Air Force Test Pilot School (TPS) approaches its 80th anniversary, it is undergoing a significant transformation. TPS is updating its curriculum, enhancing staff development, and expanding its research capabilities to address the complex Great Power Competition. Southwest Airlines is stepping up its safety precautions by mandating additional pilot training. This decision follows a string of incidents and an intensified FAA safety

Work on the SportPlane Resource Guide is going well… Albeit a little bit behind schedule, because as we got into this process, things became a bit more complicated simply because we learned we could do an even better job at certain aspects of this project than we thought from the beginning.
